I could recommend A Love Beyond Time strictly on the basis of its historical authenticity, the well-developed secondary characters such as Charley Crying Wolf and Wolf's 19th century companions, and Aitken's competent writing style, but it was the compelling romance between Ryan and Wolf that kept me turning the pages. In a genre where "happily ever after" is a given, Aitken managed to make me anxious for Ryan and Wolf to find love in the days before a horrific battle and then to find it again in our era. Quite an accomplishment for a first-time author.

I won't give away any more of the plot, except to say that this romance kept me enthralled from the beginning to the end. All along the journey, the author proves again and again her knowledge of Native American tradition and customs. Her well woven depictions of everyday life were so real I could see the Lakota camp spread out on the banks of the Greasy Grass river. I literally had chills reading the scene where the heroine sees the camp for the first time. It was so good that I went back and read it again.

The story line successfully uses time travel, Native American lore and magic, contemporary issues, and historical components blended into a powerful mix that proves Julie Aitken is a creative force with a wonderful future. The lead characters are an interesting pair and the support cast adds much depth regardless of the century. This multi-faceted winner will fascinate cross sub-genre readers.
